Distribution of subchondral bone density and cartilage

چکیده
Subchondral bone density (by means of CT osteoabsorptiometry), and cartilage thickness (directly measured on photocopies of frozen sections), were examined in 30 human patellae, with an age range from 47 to 90 y. A surface demonstration of the distribution was prepared, and representative pictures produced by summation with a computer. Subchondral bone-density maxima were found in the proximal part of the lateral facet, and the density pattern interpreted as the expression of the long-term distribution of stress in the joint. It is reasonable to assume that cartilage thickness, of which two-thirds of the maximum values occupy a.lateral position, is also dependent on the local stress. The 2 distributions show correlation coefficients > 0.5 in approximately a third of the cases we examined. Displacement of the higher values of cartilage thickness relative to the subchondral density maxima is attributed to incongruence in the medial

متن کاملAn integral biochemical analysis of the main constituents of articular cartilage, subchondral and trabecular bone.
OBJECTIVE In articular joints, the forces generated by locomotion are absorbed by the whole of cartilage, subchondral bone and underlying trabecular bone. The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that regional differences in joint loading are related to clear and interrelated differences in the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of all three weight-bearing constituents. ...
متن کاملCartilage Degeneration, Subchondral Mineral and Meniscal Mineral Densities in Hartley and Strain 13 Guinea Pigs
Osteoarthritis is a joint disease involved in articular cartilage, subchondral bone, meniscus and synovial membrane. This study sought to examine cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone mineral density (BMD) and meniscal mineral density (MD) in male Hartley, female Hartley and female strain 13 guinea pigs to determine the association of cartilage degeneration with subchondral BMD and meniscal ...
متن کاملCharacterization of subchondral bone repair for marrow-stimulated chondral defects and its relationship to articular cartilage resurfacing.
BACKGROUND Microfracture and drilling are bone marrow-stimulation techniques that initiate cartilage repair by providing access to cell populations in subchondral bone marrow. This study examined the effect of hole depth and of microfracture versus drilling on subchondral bone repair and cartilage repair in full-thickness chondral defects. HYPOTHESES Repaired subchondral bone does not reconst...
متن کاملStiffness of the proximal tibial bone in osteoarthritic conditions: a parametric simulation study
INTRODUCTION Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful, debilitating joint disease marked by cartilage degeneration and underlying subchondral bone changes [1]. To date, the exact mechanism of OA initiation and progression is unclear [2]. One predominant theory indicates that observed increased quantity and stiffness of bone near the subchondral surface results in an overall stiffer subchondral bone, wh...
